What is a Nevada contractor’s license bond?

Every contractor issued a contractor’s license in the state of Nevada requires a Nevada contractor’s bond in an amount ranging from $1,000 to $500,000. The Nevada State Contractors Board determines the amount of your contractor bond depending on the type of contractor’s license requested, experience, monetary limit granted, current, past or future financial responsibilities, as well as the character of the contractors license bond applicant.

Once licensed by the state, a contractor has an obligation not to commit any violation of law that could be grounds for disciplinary action against the license. A Nevada contractor’s license bond is a contract in which the surety company promises the state of Nevada that contractor will comply with all state regulations. If the contractor does not comply with the conditions of the law, a claim can be filed against his Nevada contractor’s license bond with the surety company. Claims against a surety company may be filed by employees, homeowners, or any other person damaged by a willful and deliberate violation of a construction contract.

Also known as surety bonds, contractor bonds should not be confused with an insurance policy. If a surety company must pay out a claim, the contractor is still liable for their obligations and must repay the surety company for losses incurred as a result of the contractor’s actions.
